Energy savings for fixed lighting and a corresponding reduction in CO² emissions. Optimum road safety, improved grip and increased stability.
Luxovite® is a calcined flint that is used as an artificial reflective aggregate. It is made from blue-black raw flint that formed in cavities of lime formations. Water seeping through the lime formations over thousands of years released silicon dioxide (SiO2) in the form of minute grains, which contained about 0.2% of water.
The flint is calcined in a furnace at a temperature of 1200ºc. This process removes the water from the flint and gives the stone its white color and crystalline structure. If the stone were to be cut into wafer-thin slices with a laser, the slices would be transparent and crystalline.
The crystalline structure of the stone ensures a singularly high level of light and heat reflection. After calcination the white flint is crushed and sieved into precise size fractions. Luxovite® a white crystalline graded flint has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale (while diamond is 10). The use of this high-quality product as an aggregate in reflective asphalt surface courses produces a high level of light reflection on dry and particularly wet roads that cannot be achieved with natural stone.
